I entitled the piece 'Tribalism' and wrote a bio for it: 'Hanna Terefe’s work is centred around heritage, identity and power structures. In this work, entitled ‘Tribalism’, she has used imagery of Ethiopian tribal people photographed by her Mother in 1997 and used them to create various digital collages, which she has then collated and laser engraved onto Acrylic Perspex. With this piece, Terefe aims to explore questions surrounding our understanding of both personal and communal identity.'

Upon reflection, I think this short project was very successful - what I think was most striking is the fact that the projections were bigger than life-size - they took up space - they forced your attention to them. Much like my previous laser engraved projection - they became much scarier and more eery when projected in this way. The lack of definition made the masks look like gas masks - reminiscent of those used during the war. They felt far less familiar and much more removed from reality. I think this is an interesting juxtaposition as it was m own mother who took the original photos. These are not strangers - these are people whom she interacted with and allowed her to be part of their world. However, all of the tenderness is stripped back when presented in this way and for that reason I really enjoy this work. It makes me question my own perception and view my own creation in a different way.
