Although I was very pleased with the outcome of my laser cut projection - I wanted to develop the project and think more conceptually about the imagery that I was using. I wanted to stay with the motif of power structures, identity and tribalism.Although it was fascinating learning abut the Goru tribe, I wanted to link the project more to my personal heritage and tribal roots. My mother is from Ethiopia and our family live in the Oromo region of the country. In our living room there are pictures hanging that my mother took when visiting Ethiopia with my Dad in 1997. On this trip they travelled around the country by bus and car and visited the different tribes such as the tribes in Omo Valley and the Hamar tribe. I asked my mother if she still had digital copies of the images and she said that she did, as well as 3 hour long DVDs of footage from the trip that my Dad filmed on a camcorder. I remember having seen this footage when I was little and was immediately excited to use it in my work. Initially I thought of making a short film using this footage and spent some days trying to accomplish this, and although I still plan on making this short film I thought it was not the right direction for this short project.
